A VCL file can be used as a Project Map in Siteworks, providing background linework for reference while working in the field. This functions similarly to using a DXF or DWG file as a project map.
Note: The Project Map VCL file is separate from any VCL design files or avoidance zone files used within the project.
Adding a VCL Project Map
When Creating a New Site
During site creation, select the VCL file as the Project Map file.
For an Existing Site
If the project has already been created:
- Copy the VCL file into the project's root folder.
- Open the project in Siteworks.
The linework contained within the VCL file will be displayed as background mapping when the project is loaded.
What Is Displayed?
When a Project Map VCL file is loaded, Siteworks displays:
- VCL linework
This linework provides visual context for the project and can be used as a reference while measuring, staking out, or navigating the site.
What Is Not Displayed?
Only linework is supported within a Project Map VCL file.
The following elements are not displayed:
- Alignments
- Text annotations
- Labels
If these items are included in the VCL file, they will be ignored when the project is opened.
Interacting with Project Map Linework
Project Map linework is displayed for reference purposes only.
Users cannot:
- Select the linework
- Edit the linework
- Snap to the linework
- Interact with the linework in any way
This behaviour is the same as when using DXF or DWG files as project maps.
Best Practices
✅ Use Project Map VCL files to provide additional visual reference for field crews.
✅ Ensure all required linework is included in the VCL file before deploying it to the field.
✅ Keep Project Map VCL files separate from machine control design files and avoidance zone files.
✅ Place the VCL file in the project root folder when adding it to an existing project.
✅ Remember that alignments and text information will not be displayed.
Key Points
- VCL files can be used as Siteworks project maps.
- Only linework is displayed.
- Alignments and text data are not shown.
- Project Map linework is view-only and cannot be selected or modified.
- Functionality is equivalent to using DXF or DWG files as background maps.
