The Review & Edit Data COGO feature supports VCL design objects, allowing you to use points, lines, and surfaces from the active VCL design when performing calculations and design reviews.
Supported VCL Objects
Within the Review & Edit Data COGO feature, you can use:
- VCL Points
- VCL Lines
- Active VCL Surface
This allows design information stored in the VCL file to be used directly in COGO calculations without requiring conversion to another file format.
Distance Calculations
VCL lines and points can be selected when performing:
Compute Distance
Calculate the distance between selected design objects or points.
Compute Total Distance
Calculate the cumulative distance across multiple selected segments.
Area Calculations
VCL linework can be used when performing:
Compute Area
Calculate the area enclosed by selected design segments.
This can be useful for reviewing design boundaries, stockpile areas, pad layouts, and other site features.
Down and Out Calculations
VCL points and lines can be selected when using:
Compute Down and Out
Calculate horizontal and vertical offsets from the selected design objects.
Angle Calculations
VCL points can be used for:
Compute Angles
Select VCL points to calculate included angles and other point-based geometric relationships.
Volume Calculations
The active surface can be used in volume calculations.
Supported surface types include:
- VCL Surface
- Corridor Surface
- Corridor Template Surface
This allows volume computations to be performed using any supported active surface contained within the VCL design.

Important Note About VPI Line strings
Line strings created in Trimble Business Center that contain Vertical Points of Intersection (VPI) definitions are supported within Siteworks.
However, when these line strings are used in COGO calculations:
VPI-defined line strings are treated as 2D lines.
This means only the horizontal geometry of the line string is used during the calculation, and any vertical profile information is ignored.
Best Practices
✅ Verify the correct VCL surface is active before performing volume calculations.
✅ Use named points and linework to simplify object selection in Review & Edit Data workflows.
✅ Confirm the selected design objects before calculating areas or distances.
✅ Remember that VPI-defined line strings are processed as 2D geometry in COGO calculations.
✅ Review calculation results when working with complex corridor or roadway designs.
Key Points
- The Review & Edit Data COGO feature supports VCL points, lines, and surfaces.
- VCL points can be used for distance, angle, and down-and-out calculations.
- VCL lines can be used for distance, total distance, area, and down-and-out calculations.
- All active VCL surface types can be used for volume calculations.
- Corridor surfaces and corridor template surfaces are supported for volume computations.
- Line strings with VPI definitions are treated as 2D lines when used in COGO calculations.
