Location on Surface is the simplest corridor staking method available in Siteworks. Rather than staking a specific corridor feature or catch point, it allows you to navigate anywhere on the corridor surface and view real-time station, offset, elevation, and cut/fill information.
This workflow is ideal for:
- Grade checking
- Construction verification
- Quality control inspections
- Spot checks along a corridor
- Navigating to a specific station and offset
Start Location on Surface Staking
- From the Map screen, select Home > Stake.
- Select the required corridor from the Corridor tab.
- You can select the corridor from the object list, or
- Tap the corridor directly on the map.
- In the Stake Method field, select Location.
- Tap ACCEPT.
Select a Location
You can define the target location in either of two ways:
Enter Station and Offset
Manually enter:
- Station
- Offset
to navigate to a specific position on the corridor surface.
Select from the Map
Tap directly on the corridor model and Siteworks automatically determines the station and offset.
Override the Design Elevation
If required, you can specify an alternative design elevation for the selected station and offset.
To do this:
- Tap the drop-down arrow in the upper-left corner.
- Select Custom Elevation.
- Enter the required elevation.
This is useful when checking temporary grades, construction lifts, or design modifications.
Navigate to the Location
Once the target location has been defined, Siteworks provides:
- Direction guidance
- Distance to target
- Design elevation
- Current elevation
- Cut/fill information
- Station and offset values
A guide arrow is displayed to help direct you toward the selected location.
The guide arrow can be enabled or disabled through:
Map Options > Design
Customise the Information Display
The information bar can be configured to display the values most relevant to your workflow.
Access settings through:
Settings > Info Bar/Panel
Common values displayed include:
- Station
- Offset
- Design Elevation
- Current Elevation
- Cut/Fill
- Horizontal Distance
- GO Direction
Map Orientation
By default, the map displays with north at the top of the screen.
Alternative rotation modes can be selected through Map Options, including:
- Travel direction
- Alignment direction
- North-up
Many users prefer travel-direction rotation when performing stakeout activities.
For additional visual guidance, enable the Cut/Fill Light Bar in the left-side display panels.
Fine Stake Mode
When approaching the selected station and offset, Siteworks automatically switches to Fine Stake Mode.
Fine Stake Mode provides:
- Precision navigation arrows
- Remaining horizontal offset information
- Real-time positioning guidance
If map rotation by travel direction is enabled, the screen orientation follows the direction of travel immediately before Fine Stake Mode is activated.
GNSS and Total Station Guidance
GNSS
Fine stake arrows are displayed in a north-up orientation.
Total Station
Arrow orientation depends on the instrument connection method:
Bluetooth or Cable Connection
- Directions appear as if you are standing behind the instrument looking toward the prism.
Radio Connection
- Directions appear as if you are standing at the prism looking toward the instrument.
Record the Stakeout
When the desired location is reached:
- Tap Measure.
- Siteworks generates a Stake Marker Report.
The report includes:
- Design elevation
- Measured elevation
- Cut/fill values
- Stake marking instructions
- Graphical stake-marking diagram
The report calculations are based on the configured Stakeout Settings, including the selected stake marking method.
Siteworks remembers the last report tab that was viewed and reopens it automatically for future stakeout points.
Fixed and Random Station Modes
Location on Surface supports both stationing workflows:
| Mode | Description |
|---|---|
| Fixed Station | Navigate to a specific station and offset. |
| Random Station | Move freely across the corridor surface while continuously displaying station, offset, and cut/fill values. |
Random mode is particularly useful for:
- Grade checks
- Surface verification
- As-built inspections
- Construction quality control
Switching Between Corridor Stakeout Methods
You can switch between corridor stakeout workflows using the Stake Method icon in the status bar.
Available methods include:
| Method | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Feature | Stake specific corridor nodes such as edge of pavement or shoulder. |
| Location on Corridor Surface | Stake or inspect any location on the corridor surface. |
| Catch Point | Stake daylight lines and tie-slope intersections. |
Tip: Use Location on Surface when performing construction checks or machine-control verification. It provides the fastest way to obtain real-time station, offset, elevation, and cut/fill information anywhere on a corridor without needing to select specific corridor features.
