WorksOS supports the manual import of several project data types, including design surfaces, linework, alignments, and surveyed surfaces. These files provide context, reference information, and analysis capabilities within a project.
Design Surfaces (.ttm)
Design surfaces can be imported into WorksOS as a Trimble Triangulated/Terrain Model (TTM) file.
A design surface represents the intended finished construction surface and uses X, Y, and Z coordinates to define horizontal and vertical positions across the project.
Best Practice: To ensure consistent progress tracking and productivity reporting, use the same design surface in WorksOS that has been deployed to machines in the field.
Importing a Design Surface
When importing a .ttm file, you must specify whether it should be treated as a:
Design Surface, or
Surveyed Surface
Using Design Surfaces
After import:
- The design appears as a blue closed polygon boundary on the Map screen.
- Boundary filtering can be applied to display only data located within the design boundary.
- Design surfaces can be used in:
- Work Remaining calculations
- Cut/Fill analysis
- Volume calculations
Progress measurements against the finished design
Linework Files (.dxf)
Linework can be imported into WorksOS using the DXF file format, a widely used CAD exchange standard.
Linework provides a visual representation of project features and can help illustrate how completed structures, roads, or surfaces are intended to appear.
Importing Linework
When importing a .dxf file, you must select the unit of measurement used when the file was created (for example, in Trimble Business Center).
Important: Selecting incorrect units may cause the linework to display in the wrong location on the map.
Using Linework
After import:
Linework is displayed on the Map screen using its original colours.
It provides visual reference only.
The data cannot be filtered, analysed, or interacted with within WorksOS.
Linework files can contain detailed and complex information and may take longer to upload and render depending on file size.
Alignment Files (.svl)
Alignments can be imported into WorksOS using the SVL file format, a native Trimble alignment format.
An alignment contains:
A centreline
Stationing or chainage information
Start and end distance values
Alignments are commonly used for road construction projects and represent the centreline of a proposed road or corridor.
Using Alignments
Once imported:
Alignments appear as red lines on the Map screen.
Station and chainage labels are displayed along the alignment.
Alignments can be used to spatially filter project data and generate reports.
Alignment Filter
The Alignment Filter allows you to:
Select an alignment
Define a section of the alignment to analyse
Specify distances to the left and right of the centreline
This can be used to isolate data associated with selected road sections, lanes, or corridors.
Station & Offset Reporting
The Station & Offset Report uses the same alignment filtering approach to:
Select project data
Define reporting intervals
Analyse information at specified station or chainage locations
Surveyed Surfaces (.ttm)
Surveyed surfaces can also be imported into WorksOS as .ttm files.
These surfaces are typically created from:
Survey equipment
Data collectors
Drone surveys
A surveyed surface represents the actual site conditions at a specific point in time and is often used as a reliable reference for project status.
Importing a Surveyed Surface
When importing a .ttm file:
Select Surveyed Surface as the file type.
Enter a Survey Date and Time.
The survey date and time establish the "as-at" timestamp for the surface and determine how it interacts with other project data.
How Surveyed Surfaces Work
Surveyed surfaces combine with machine productivity data to create a composite project surface.
When surveyed surface data and machine productivity data overlap:
The most recent data takes precedence.
Survey timestamps and machine data timestamps are used to determine which surface is displayed.
Surface behaviour can also be influenced by WorksOS data filtering settings.
Visibility and Analysis
Surveyed surfaces are available in:
Elevation views
Cut/Fill Quality Metrics
Volume calculations
Surveyed surfaces do not contain quality metric information such as:
Pass counts
Compacted Meter Value (CMV)
Machine Drive Power (MDP)
Temperature
Speed
As a result:
They are not displayed in these quality metrics.
The Detailed Data View (DDV) tool only displays machine productivity data.
Common Uses for Surveyed Surfaces
Surveyed surfaces are commonly imported to:
Establish the original ground or topographic survey for a project.
Capture periodic site surveys during construction.
Supplement or replace missing or poor-quality machine productivity data.
Managing Surveyed Surfaces
Within the Imports section, all surveyed surface imports can be enabled or disabled together.
This applies to surveyed surfaces that are not currently being used by an active Activity Setup.
