Measuring with Feature Codes
Note: The Advanced Measurement module is required to use a Feature Code Library (FXL).
Feature codes provide a structured way to collect survey data in the field. Using a Feature Code Library allows measurements to be automatically classified as points, lines, surface points, or breaklines, ensuring consistent data capture and streamlining processing back in the office.
The feature code library is created and managed in Trimble Business Center using the Feature Definition Manager and is stored as an FXL file.
An FXL file can be assigned to a project by:
- Selecting it when creating a new project.
- Associating it with a project in WorksManager.
- Copying the FXL file directly into the project's root directory.
Feature Code Classes
Each feature code determines how measurements are recorded and whether they contribute to a surface model.
Viewing the Active Feature Code
The currently selected feature code and its classification can be displayed in the information bar.
To enable this:
- Open the information bar settings.
- Enable the FXL Code display option.
The active code and feature type are then shown during measurement.
Accessing Feature Codes in the Field
To manage feature codes while measuring:
- Tap the main measurement panel to display the quick access toolbar.
- Select the FXL Settings icon.
This opens the Feature Code matrix, where feature codes can be filtered, selected, and organised for quick access.
FXL Code Matrix Functions
| Option | Function |
|---|---|
| ① | Filter feature codes by group or category. |
| ② | Select a feature code. |
| ③ | Drag a code into the Quick Select list. |
| ④ | Select a code from the Quick Select list. |
| ⑤ | Switch to Grid View. |
Quick Select and Grid View
Quick Select
Frequently used feature codes can be added to the Quick Select list for faster access while measuring.
Grid View
Grid View allows data collection without displaying the map.
Benefits include:
- One-tap access to up to 34 feature codes.
- Faster feature selection.
- Improved productivity during intensive feature mapping tasks.
Groups and Categories
Feature codes can be organised using categories and groups defined in Feature Definition Manager.
Categories
Categories contain related feature codes.
Example:
- Vegetation
- Drainage
- Utilities
- Buildings
Groups
Groups allow feature codes from multiple categories to be combined for a specific workflow or survey task.
This helps field crews access the most relevant codes without searching through the complete library.
Recording Attributes
Feature codes can include attributes that store additional information with a point or line.
Examples include:
- Tree species
- Pipe diameter
- Asset condition
- Surface material
- Utility type
Attributes are configured in Feature Definition Manager and cannot be created or modified in the field.
Attribute settings can control:
- Whether an attribute is mandatory or optional.
- Accepted values.
- Text length restrictions.
- Dropdown lists.
- Pick lists.
FXL Line Colours
From Siteworks v1.75 onwards, measured lines can display using the colour defined in the FXL library.
To enable this:
- Open Measure Settings.
- Enable Use Defined FXL Color.
When enabled:
- Measured lines are displayed using their assigned FXL colour.
- The currently measured line remains a thick red line while being captured.
- Lines assigned a white colour are displayed as black.
When disabled:
- All measured lines are displayed in black.
Note: Line styles defined in the FXL library, such as dashed or dotted lines, are not displayed in Siteworks. Only line colours are supported.
Benefits of Using Feature Codes
Using a Feature Code Library helps ensure:
- Consistent field data collection.
- Faster office processing.
- Automatic classification of survey features.
- Accurate surface creation using surface points and breaklines.
- Standardised attributes across projects and survey crews.
Tip: Configure groups, categories, Quick Select codes, and attributes in Trimble Business Center before going to site. A well-designed FXL library can significantly reduce field entry time and improve data quality.
